Our Right to Housing:
Working together towards Housing Justice for Refugees
Refugees often confront discrimination in the housing market, where they compete for limited affordable housing with other socioeconomically marginalized groups. As a result, many refugees live in substandard and unhealthy conditions and experience segregation. What are the strategies for refugees' short- and long-term housing needs amid increasing housing shortage? How can the refugee community mobilize and self-advocate for safe and affordable housing? Join this interactive workshop to learn about the refugee housing landscape in the Greater Seattle area, with practical strategies to support both immediate and long-term housing needs amid severe local shortages. This session will discuss why individual refugees often have limited capacity to advocate for themselves and how Community Based Organizations play a critical role in advancing their housing rights. Participants will gain insight into the migration patterns of homeless refugees across the United States as they seek assistance, and what these movements reveal about persistent gaps within the national housing support system.
